Plans (beta) :
There's a new Plans menu under the Trips dropdown. Plans are a parallel world where trips don't quite exist yet: they don't count toward stats and don't appear on your map. You can build them with fixed dates or as Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, then set an anchor date once you know when you're leaving. When you take the trip, validate the plan and it becomes real trips, with the plan name as a tag and expenses as tickets. You can run several parallel plans while deciding, and delete or archive the ones you don't take. In the medium term, Plans are meant to replace the confusing "project" trip type.

3D flights (premium) :
Imported flights now come with elevation, and public trip pages can show the actual flight path in 3D. Turn it on in settings and reimport the flight. Every import is saved with elevation data regardless of premium status, so anything you import from now on will have it whenever you subscribe.

A reminder that premium is attained by supporting Trainlog at the Trainlogger level or above on Buy Me a Coffee.

Operators :
The new/edit operator interface has been redone: logos in the search results, easier multi-operator input, and multi operators now show in the trip list. Under the hood there's now a real aliasing system, so SBB, CFF and FFS trips group together in stats and search finds them whatever spelling you used. Aliases are admin managed and will be filled in progressively.

Tags and multitrips :
You can now create tags directly from the new trip, edit and trip list pages, and invite friends into a tag to build a multitrip together. A tag with several members becomes a multitrip exclusively, so keep a second tag if you also want a personal one.

Routing :
Freehand is no longer a separate page, you call it straight from the routing panel, which also got a visual polish. And when a route includes a ferry or a train shuttle, the router now offers to log it as one continuous trip or split it into legs (car, ferry, car for example).

Smaller things :

• Manual stations are now personal: yours no longer mix with everyone else's, private trip types (walk, car, POI...) can have them too, and you manage them from the tools menu.
• Trainsets can be coupled together, and they now appear on sharing links and the live map.
• "Via" waypoints on the new trip page, to steer the routing without affecting anything else.
• A button on top of the past trip list to show future trips above it, handy when sharing a link mid-trip.
• New look for the news, and emoji reactions !
• News notifications now follow your account instead of your browser, and news can be formatted (as you can see).

I've spent some time working under the hood to make Trainlog faster and more solid! Here's a summary of what's changed.

Database migration :
Trainlog has been migrated from SQLite to PostgreSQL. This is a big behind-the-scenes change that gives the site a much more robust foundation, far better handling of lots of people using it at once, and plenty of room to grow. Everything has moved across unchanged, so your trips, paths, tickets, tags and stats are all exactly where you left them. Day to day you shouldn't notice anything different, other than things feeling a little bit quicker.

Improved search :
On the trip list page, search has been improved leveraging the new DB, and I took the occasion to replace apostrophes ' with backticks ` for the exact search, this to avoid colliding with station names that contain an apostrophe. It is also now possible to do a negative search using an exclamation mark. The search manual is available by clicking on the i icon next to the search bar

Improved trip page :
The trip map page has had a visual refresh. The map markers have been redesigned, and you can now highlight a trip to see exactly which part of the itinerary it matches. The map and the itinerary list are linked together now, so clicking a trip lights it up on the map, and vice versa.

Several updates have been added recently. Here's a summary of everything new.

Delay fields :
You can now log delays on your trips. When a delay is entered, the recorded time is treated as the planned time, and the actual time is calculated as planned + delay. Delays can be entered in minutes, or as planned/actual times — your preference is saved in your browser. This option is tucked under a tick box below the date fields. Delays are displayed in the trip list, and more features will build on this in the future.

Improved sorting :
A new sorting button has been added at the top of the trip list. It offers more granular options, including sorting by delay, and is significantly more usable on mobile.

Bulk edit :
You can now select multiple trips and edit them all at once using the bulk edit option (select trips, then click the arrow).

Trainsets :
Trainsets are now available on Trainlog. You can attach a train composition to any rail trip, a composition being a visual arrangement of the rolling stock that made up your train.

Two new elements come with this:

Wagons: individual rolling stock elements, each with an associated image.
Trainsets: named, saved compositions you can reuse across multiple trips.

When attaching a composition to a trip, you can either link it to a saved trainset (which will reflect any future edits to that trainset) or use a one-off composition that stays frozen unless you edit it manually.

Compositions can be built directly from the trip page on any device. Use Apply for a one-off composition, or Save & Apply to name it and reuse it later. A dedicated trainset builder is also available on desktop with a more polished interface.

There are public trainsets created by admins with a standardised naming system, alongside private ones you can name freely. Compositions are shown in the trip list, inline behind a button on the line name and in the collapsible sub-row.

A new setting has been added to trips called 'Visibility', to allow setting the visibility on a per-trip level, rather than the previous model where some modes of transit are assumed private and others public.

Implements a fairly popular feature request, feature request #4. Also tackles feature request #147.

the 'Visibility' field has three options:

• Public (Trip appears on the user's profile/map/trip list, does not grant access to the user's profile if account access is set to private or restricted. Trip appears on live map if user is opted in to live map.)

• Friends (trip appears on the user's profile/map/trip list when viewed by friends)

• Private (Trip is only visible to the user and cannot be seen by friends or the general public)

Trips will have a visibility set by default. This default corresponds to Trainlog's current visibility rules:
accommodation, poi, restaurant, car, walk, and cycle will be private by default. Everything else will be public by default.

Finally, a bulk editing option to quickly set the visibility for multiple trips has been added.

Important backend changes to speed up the stats page

• New train router is being tested, now with gathering of electrification data on the line
• Unless manually set, assumes that the train is electric if the line is electrified
• Tries to follow the preferred driving side where specified on the OSM data
• Old router still the default while the new router is being tested and fine tuned
• Shows electrification data on hover of the country flags in the trip list
• New carbon functionality in trips (add ?carbon at the end of a trip link to visualise)
• New carbon leaderboard at https://trainlog.me/leaderboard/carbon (will be integrated in the UI soon)
• Estimate emissions based on the transportation method :

Train/Metro/Tram/Aerialway:
Electric segments: 0.04 kWh/passenger-km × country-specific grid intensity (gCO2/kWh)
Diesel segments: 0.015 L/passenger-km × 2.65 kg CO2/L
Base: construction (1.5-2 g/km) + infrastructure (3.5-6.5 g/km)
Default country average diesel share applied if no electrification data available
Metro/tram/aerial assumed fully electric

Air:
Base: 140/110/95 g CO2/km for short/medium/long-haul
Aircraft-specific values used when available
Non-CO2 multiplier: 1.7× (contrails, NOx effects)

Car: 217.7 g/km base (192 fuel + 25.6 construction + 0.7 infrastructure)
Bus: 30.12 g/km (25 fuel + 4.42 construction + 0.7 infrastructure)
Ferry: 121 g/km (80 fuel + 30 services + 11 construction)
Cycle: 2.1 g/km (2 construction + 0.1 human metabolism)
Walk: 0.2 g/km (human metabolism only)

Trainlog has been released as open source software under Apache 2.0 license, making the codebase publicly available for community contributions and transparency.

Enhanced routing and premium features:
- Removable waypoints: Right-click (desktop) or long-press (mobile) to remove routing waypoints
- Premium benefits: Unlimited FR24 API calls and exclusive map backgrounds for supporters
- Manual activation: Premium status manually managed with some activation delays expected

Major aviation features update:
- Multi-waypoint flights: Air paths no longer limited to simple point-to-point routes
- Flightradar24 integration: Direct API import with 5 monthly calls per user
- GPX import: Replace any trip path with GPX data on edit pages
- Premium tier: Unlimited FR24 API calls for Buy Me a Coffee subscribers

Users of Jawg maps now get map backgrounds in their native language for French, German, English, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Russian, and Chinese interfaces.

A completely redesigned mapping experience:
- WebGL acceleration: Massively faster performance on supported devices
- Projection options: Choose between Mercator projection and globe view (?globe=true)
- Multiple tileservers: Various map styles including Jawg and Thunderforest options
- Solid lines: Technical change from dotted to solid lines for all routes
- Settings integration: Tileserver and globe preferences saveable in settings

Portuguese language support has been added to Trainlog thanks to community contributor batataxpt0, expanding accessibility for Portuguese-speaking users.

Major new features and geographic updates:
- Live traveler map: Opt-in real-time map of currently traveling users (public transit only, privacy-focused)
- Territory recognition: French, Dutch, and US territories now have individual ISO codes for accurate routing and statistics
- Geographic accuracy: Improved router selection based on precise territory boundaries

Bus routing system has been reorganized into consistent geographic groups with OSRM fallback for reliability. Routes crossing multiple groups automatically fall back to OSRM for consistency.

The privacy policy has been rewritten to be more specific and less generic. It's now available in 20 languages and accessible via the signup page and about menu. Available at https://trainlog.me/privacy with language-specific versions.

Estonia has been added to the community-contributed enhanced bus routing system. Note: non-contiguous routes between different routing regions will fall back to car routing.

Significant improvements to bus routing infrastructure:
- Enhanced routing: More specific one-way road support (thanks to community contributor)
- North American coverage: New local routing for Canada, Mexico, Greenland, and United States
- Coverage areas:
- Trainlog servers: France, Norway, Andorra, Monaco, Belgium, Netherlands
- Community contributor: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Estonia
- North American contributor: Canada, Mexico, Greenland, United States
- Fallback: Other countries use OSRM car router

Station search algorithm refined for better homonym handling:
- Same name in different countries no longer considered homonyms
- Region/state names added in brackets for same-name stations
- Alphabetical suffixes (a), (b), (c) used when region names are identical
- Suffixes not saved in trip data

Enhanced ticket system with country limitations to handle cross-border trips where tickets are only valid in specific countries. Selecting no country means the ticket is valid everywhere.

A major community contribution: Firefox extension "Trainlog Utilities" by SimuNews:
- Auto-import: Direct import from ÖBB, DB, and Interrail websites
- One-click operation: Upload trips directly from booking sites
- Platform accuracy: Auto-routing with platform-level precision
- Future expansion: Chrome/Opera versions and additional sites planned
- Available on Firefox Add-ons store

Small but useful updates:
- Tram and Metro trips now save to Manual stations
- Legacy train manual stations removed due to mixed type issues
- Merge button added to trip multilink interfaces for easier trip combination

Major transport type expansion:
- New types: Tram and Metro now available alongside Train
- Routing: Uses same router as trains but enables separate statistics and mapping
- Station search: Enhanced with tram/metro/subway stations while maintaining train compatibility
- Type conversion: Bulk conversion tool available at https://trainlog.me//toType//
- Cache clearing: New browser cache clear button in settings
- Manual stations: Cleanup performed due to type additions

Several feature updates:
- "Utilities" menu renamed to "Tools" across all languages
- GPX import feature released from alpha to all users

- Merged trips combine operators and prices, with dates spanning from first start to last end

The enhanced statistics interface has become the default experience for all users. The previous interface remains accessible at //old_stats for those who prefer it.

Links in trip views (create, edit, copy) are now proper links, supporting standard browser behaviors like middle-click, right-click, and context menus.

To accommodate new features while keeping the menu manageable, tickets and tags have been moved to a new "Tools" menu in the navigation bar.

The toggle switch for displaying personal trips in the trip list now saves its state in a cookie, maintaining the setting for 7 days.

Korean language support has been added to Trainlog, available since December 31st, 2024.

Multiple post-holiday improvements:
- UN flag removed from country leaderboard
- Enhanced import function protection against database locks
- Fixed trip multilink divider behavior
- Tag list now ordered by most recent usage (latest trip end date)
- Fixed year mode display bug for general map

Several behind-the-scenes improvements:
- Accessibility improvements contributed by community member
- Wider click zones on routing page for easier mobile waypoint addition
- Database saving process improvements to prevent locking issues

Multiple improvements have been implemented:
- Various security enhancements
- FR24 import now properly updates when duplicates are added
- Year-only flights are now correctly added on January 1st of the specified year

Private trips are now visible on users' personal maps while remaining hidden from public map views. Aerialway coverage has also been added to the general map display.

Ferry image processing has been enhanced with backend improvements. Users should report any incorrect ferry images for further refinement. Reminder: ship names belong in the registration field, not vehicle type field.

Current trips now have a distinctive visual appearance in trip sharing views, making it easier to identify ongoing journeys.

Major updates include:
- GeoJSON export: Available at https://trainlog.me/geojson/
- Database-driven operators: Logos can now be time-differentiated (e.g., Eurostar has different logos based on trip date)
- Future aliasing support: Infrastructure prepared for grouping related operators (e.g., CFF, SBB, FFS) in statistics
- Dynamic trips: All trip views now use dynamic loading for better performance

Individual trips can now be exported in GPX format using the URL pattern: https://trainlog.me/gpx/

Aerialway trip types have been promoted from alpha to general availability and are now included in leaderboard calculations.

Trip origins and destinations can now be edited in the edit/copy screens. This is a text-only change that affects statistics groupings for the modified trip without impacting searches or other stored data.

Netherlands now includes provincial subdivisions for detailed coverage tracking, added by user request.

Planned future trips now display with striped white/color patterns for better visibility and distinction from completed trips.

Multiple visual and functional improvements:
- Refined color scheme for less aggressive appearance
- New map legend in bottom-left corner showing trip status colors
- Updated future trip visualizations: definite future (transparent color), indefinite future (transparent white), current trips (blinking color)
- Belgium regional subdivisions added
- Ukrainian language support added

Finland now includes regional subdivisions for more detailed coverage tracking, added by user request.

The routing page has received several improvements:
- Waypoints are now numbered for easier reference
- Optional "antpath" visualization available (add &antpath=true to URL)
- Antpath may become the default if no issues are reported

Regional flags have been implemented for selected subregions, providing more detailed geographical representation in trip displays.

A new coverage system has been introduced based on 1°×1° grid squares (C-squares). The system:
- Divides Earth into 64,800 squares
- Calculates percentage of visited squares
- Includes dedicated map view and leaderboard
- Updates when loading your map
- Available for users who opt into leaderboard participation

Seven new trip types have been released from beta:
- Static types: Accommodation, Restaurant, POI
- Personal transport: Walk, Cycle, Car
- Public transport: Helicopter

These secondary trip types help fill gaps in travel records and enable more complete trip cost calculations. They don't appear on the general map and can be hidden from trip lists and public views.

Station search results now prioritize stations that appear frequently in a user's existing trips, making it easier to find commonly used locations.

Trainlog interface is now available in Danish, Croatian, Japanese, and Estonian, expanding accessibility for international users.

An alternative scrolling-based trip interface is available by adding "?scroll=true" to trip URLs, providing a different navigation experience.

Trip loading has been converted to dynamic loading by default, significantly improving performance for users with large trip collections (1000+ trips). Legacy static loading remains available at specific URLs for users who prefer it.

A comprehensive tagging system has been launched, allowing users to group trips into categories:
- Collections: Group trips by theme (e.g., "night trains", "heritage trains")
- Voyages: Group related trips similar to trip sharing, with automatic updates
- Bulk tag assignment via trip selection and modal search
- Tags appear as clickable elements leading to dedicated sharing pages
- Tag list management interface for viewing and editing

Tickets can now be marked as active or inactive, controlling their visibility in dropdown menus. This allows users to hide completed or outdated tickets while keeping them reversibly archived.

Aircraft model input now features autocomplete functionality, and trip lists display full aircraft names instead of IATA codes for better readability.

A new trip copy feature has been added to the action menu in trip list view. Users can duplicate trips exactly or modify details before saving. A loading spinner indicates when the copy operation is in progress.

The trip table now automatically shows the price column when at least one trip contains price information, eliminating the need for the ?price URL parameter in most cases.

A comprehensive ticket system has been introduced to handle multi-trip passes like Interrail, Deutschlandticket, and GA passes. Features include:
- Create tickets via the navbar menu
- Associate multiple trips to tickets via bulk selection
- Individual trip ticket assignment in edit screens
- Statistics showing price per trip and per kilometer
- Visual ticket icons in trip lists (with ?price parameter)
- Support for additional individual costs (like seat reservations) alongside ticket prices

A search bar has been added to the coverage menu, making it easier to find specific locations and coverage information.

Due to current infrastructure constraints, expansion of in-house bus routing to additional countries beyond the current three is not expected in the near term.

France has been added to the in-house bus routing system, joining Norway and Netherlands in receiving more accurate bus route calculations.

The new in-house bus routing system requires significant resources, currently using 4x more RAM than the combined world train and ferry routing systems.

Bus routing for Norway and Netherlands is now handled in-house, providing more accurate routes that follow proper bus streets instead of generic routing.

A comprehensive friends system has been launched with the following features:
- Users can opt out of friend search visibility in settings (searchable by default)
- Friend requests require acceptance from the recipient
- Friends can view each other's accounts as if they were public, regardless of privacy settings
- Declined requests simply disappear without explicit notification

This system allows users to maintain private settings while selectively sharing with chosen friends.

A price parameter has been added to control price visibility in trip tables and views. Users can now share trips without revealing price information by default. Adding "?price" to URLs will show prices when desired.

The statistics page URL now reflects the current display settings, enabling users to share specific subsections of their statistics with others.

A year dropdown has been added to the statistics page, allowing users to filter their travel data by specific years for more detailed analysis.

Planned future trips are no longer included in percentage calculations, providing more accurate statistics for completed travel.

City search functionality has been improved with a fix that removes incorrectly positioned cities and provides faster search results.

A new "notes" field has been added to trips, allowing users to add personal observations and details to their travel records.

The country leaderboard has received a visual update with a new, improved design.

A refined privacy system has been introduced with three levels:
- Level 0: Private account
- Level 1: Ability to share trip links
- Level 2: Public account accessible

This adds a middle tier between fully private and fully public accounts. Existing public accounts have been moved to Level 2, while private accounts remain at Level 0.

A password reset function has been implemented, allowing users to recover their accounts more easily.

The operator search function has been improved to ignore accented letters. Searching "obb" will now find "ÖBB" and "ces" will find "České dráhy".

When a trip spans multiple countries, hovering over the flag in the trip table will now show the distance traveled in each individual country.

Users can now edit the routes of their trips, providing greater control over trip path accuracy and customization.

Groundwork for trip path editing has begun. Trip details are now displayed on the main page in addition to the edit page, improving accessibility to trip information.

A new translation module has been implemented that automates the processing of new keys and languages. German, Hungarian, and Polish are now available as interface languages.

Cookie functionality has been implemented to remember your map selections. Your ticked items on the map will now persist between sessions.

A Discord button has been added to the About page, making it easier for users to join the Trainlog community discussions.
